Current projects
Planning and development of the Peace Garden at Knox Metropolitan United Church in Regina Saskatchewan. The garden occupies 5000 square feet in the city’s downtown. Plantings are a combination of annuals, perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees. It is organically maintained and features a combination of native and introduced plants selected for their value to pollinators and other beneficial insects and birds. The work of rejuvenating the garden began in 2017 and will be complete in 2021. The garden has also been significantly expanded to include areas that were previously lawn. Planning and creation of a food forest in Regina. The food forest will be part of the existing Art Park in the city’s Heritage Community. Some funding is provided by the Every Bite Project through revenue received from sales of the book Every Bite Affects the World, by Catherine Verrall. A community based volunteer project, work on the ground began spring 2022. The Heritage Community Association operates a community vegetable garden nearby as part of its food security program. The food forest will include fruit trees and shrubs, and a number of herbs. Local people will have free access to the organic food produced in the park. The space will also be a pollinator garden, and an attractive place for people to relax. CBC News has covered the project in an online article entitled Regina Activist’s legacy lives on through edible forest, other sustainability projects.
Presentations on ecological gardening by Phil Johnson are ongoing throughout the year.
